Mount Epomeo, the highest mountain on the island of Ischia (789m), can be reached from all the towns on the island via trails of varying difficulty. The most common route starts from Fontana, a small hamlet in the municipality of Serrara Fontana, along what is known as the “military road.” Mount Epomeo was a strategic lookout point during World War II. Following this path, you can reach the summit in about an hour, as Fontana is already at approximately 440m above sea level.

This is the route I recommend for those without a guide, as it is the easiest and the only one with proper signage. If you choose a different path, it is best to hire a local guide. Personally, I prefer the southern route from Kalimera, as it is the shortest but also the most scenic, offering breathtaking views at every turn. The trail winds through acacia trees and Mediterranean vegetation, passing Pietra dell’Acqua before reaching the summit of Epomeo, which becomes visible halfway up the ascent.

After a break at the top to admire the stunning panoramas, we settle in at a restaurant, where we enjoy a delicious bruschetta followed by a plate of spaghetti with fresh tomatoes, accompanied by an excellent local white wine. Refreshed by our meal and good company, we begin the descent, passing the Radar Station at Piano San Paolo and reaching Buceto, the only source of potable water on the island. We taste the fresh spring water and continue towards Cretaio, where our transfer awaits us for the return journey.

The excursion takes place every Friday and lasts from 9:30 AM to approximately 4:00 PM, with a total walking time of about 4 hours.
Difficulty: Medium – about 1.5 hours uphill (not too steep) and 2 hours downhill.
